How to Apply for an ID at an ABSA Bank

Applying for a Smart ID card in South Africa can often feel like a day-long mission, but thankfully, there’s a more convenient way to get it done. While you don't apply for an ID directly at an ABSA bank in the traditional sense, you can complete a big part of the process and finalise your application at select ABSA bank branches through a partnership with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). This service allows you to start your application online and then visit a participating branch for your biometrics and collection.
Gone are the days when getting a new ID meant waiting in notoriously long queues at a Home Affairs office. The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has teamed up with several major banks, including Absa, to make applying for your Smart ID card or passport a much smoother experience. This means less waiting and more convenience for you.
Here's how you can go about applying for your Smart ID card, utilising the convenience of Absa's participating branches.
Your Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Your Smart ID
The whole process kicks off online, then moves to a physical branch for the final steps.
1. Start Online with eHomeAffairs
First, you need to visit the official eHomeAffairs website. This is where you'll register a profile, fill out your application form for your Smart ID, and upload any necessary supporting documents. Think of it like filling out forms online, just like SARS e-Filing.
I remember when I had to get my first Smart ID, I was dreading the long queues. But then a friend told me about the eHomeAffairs portal. It was a bit confusing at first, navigating all the sections, but once I got the hang of it, filling in the details felt just like any other online form. It saved me so much time just by doing that initial paperwork from home.
2. Make Your Payment
After filling in your details, you'll need to pay the application fee online. For your first ID card, it’s free! If you're replacing an old green bar-coded ID or getting a reissue, it usually costs R140. Make sure you use your Absa online banking details to complete this step, as you'll need to be a client of the bank where you plan to finish the process.
3. Book Your Appointment
Once payment is done (or if it's your first, free application), the eHomeAffairs system will let you book an appointment at a participating Absa branch. This appointment is super important and mandatory when using a bank branch. You'll choose a date and time that works for you.
4. Visit the Absa Branch for Biometrics
On the day of your appointment, head to the selected Absa branch. You’ll need to bring your appointment confirmation and your old green bar-coded ID book (if you have one). At the branch, DHA officials will be there to capture your fingerprints using a biometric system and take your photo. No need to get ID photos taken beforehand!
I had my appointment at an Absa branch in Sandton a few months ago. I arrived a little early, and the whole setup was very professional. The Home Affairs official was quick and efficient, capturing my fingerprints and photo without any hassle. It was definitely a far cry from the chaotic scenes I used to hear about at traditional Home Affairs offices.
5. Collect Your Smart ID
Once your Smart ID card is ready, the DHA will send you an SMS notification. You can then go back to the same Absa branch where you did your biometrics to collect your new card. This can be as quick as 12 days!
Important Points to Remember:
- Absa Client: You generally need to be an Absa client to use their branches for this service.
- Selected Branches: Not all Absa branches offer this service. Currently, Absa has six participating branches, with plans to expand this number. Make sure the branch you select is one of these designated locations.
- Documents: For first-time applicants (16 and older), you'll need your birth certificate and both parents' ID documents. If you're replacing a lost ID, you'll need a police statement.
- Convenience: This system is designed to cut down on long queues and provide a more secure, efficient way to get your Smart ID.
Getting your Smart ID card through a participating Absa branch really simplifies a process that used to be a major headache. It’s all about making essential services more accessible and convenient for everyone.
