How to Reverse a Transaction on the ABSA App

Life happens, and sometimes you make a payment on your banking app only to realise it was a mistake. Maybe you sent money to the wrong person, or a debit order went off that shouldn't have. If you're an ABSA customer, you're probably wondering if you can fix it.
Yes, you can sometimes reverse a transaction on the ABSA app, but it really depends on the type of payment and how quickly you act. For things like unauthorised debit orders, the app offers a fairly direct way to reverse them. However, for instant payments like EFTs that have already reached the other bank, it's often more complicated and usually involves contacting the recipient or ABSA directly.
How to Reverse a Debit Order on the ABSA App
Reversing a debit order on the ABSA app is usually the most straightforward type of reversal you can do yourself. Here's a simple guide:
- Open the ABSA App: Make sure you have the latest version of the ABSA Banking App on your phone and log in with your details.
- Go to the Menu: Look for the 'Menu' button, usually at the bottom right of your screen, and tap on it.
- Find Debit Orders: Select the 'Debit orders' option from the menu.
- Choose the Account: Pick the bank account that the debit order came from.
- Select the Debit Order: In the list of recent debit orders, find the one you want to reverse and tap on it.
- View Details and Reverse: You'll see the transaction details. Look for and tap the 'Reverse Payment' option.
- Read and Continue: There will be some important information to read. Once you're done, tap 'Next'.
- Give a Reason: Choose why you are reversing the payment from the options given.
- Confirm: Accept the acknowledgment and tap 'Reverse payment' again. You might get a verification request on your phone - approve it.
- Done! You should get a confirmation that your debit order has been reversed.
A few months ago, I had a subscription service I forgot to cancel, and a debit order went through for an amount I wasn't expecting. I logged into my ABSA app right away, followed these steps, and was so relieved when the reversal went through quickly. It saved me a lot of hassle!
What About Other Payments?
Not all transactions are created equal when it comes to reversals.
For EFTs (Electronic Funds Transfers), especially instant ones, it's a bit trickier. Once an instant EFT has been processed and the money has left your account, you usually can't reverse it directly through the app. The funds are often already with the other bank or in the recipient's account. Your best bet here is to:
1. Contact the recipient immediately: Explain the mistake and ask them to send the money back.
2. Contact ABSA Support: If you can't reach the recipient or they refuse to refund you, contact ABSA's customer support through the app's chat feature or by calling them. You can ask them to try a "recall payment request". Just know that this process isn't guaranteed and can take time.
If you have a scheduled payment that hasn't gone through yet, you can usually cancel it within the scheduled payments section of the app before it's processed. This is much easier than trying to reverse it afterwards.
For card payments (debit or credit card payments made online or in stores), the reversal process usually depends on the merchant you paid. You should contact the merchant first to ask for a refund or to cancel the order. If there's an issue like fraud, then you should contact ABSA to dispute the transaction.
I remember one time I accidentally paid for online groceries twice. It was an instant EFT. I panicked because I couldn't see a "reverse" button on the app. I immediately called the grocery store, explained what happened, and thankfully, they were able to process a refund for the duplicate payment. It just showed me that sometimes, talking to the person or company you paid is the fastest way to sort things out.
Important Things to Remember
- Time is Key: The quicker you try to reverse a transaction, especially a debit order, the better your chances are. For debit orders, you typically have about 40 days to reverse them via the app.
- Limits Apply: There might be limits on the amount you can reverse through the app for certain transaction types. For example, some debit order reversals have a R500 limit in the app, and you'll need to contact ABSA for higher amounts.
- Not All Transactions Can Be Reversed: As mentioned, instant EFTs are tough. Also, payments to certain public recipients like SARS or municipal accounts, investment accounts, credit cards, or ATM transactions usually can't be reversed through the app.
- Fees May Apply: Sometimes, reversing a payment can come with a fee.
- No Guarantee: Even if you follow all the steps, ABSA doesn't guarantee that every reversal or recall will be successful. They do it on a "best effort" basis.
Understanding these points can save you stress and time if you ever need to reverse a transaction.
