How to Reverse Money Using the Capitec App

It's a sinking feeling we all know too well. You've sent money to the wrong person, or for the wrong amount, and now you're in a panic. I remember this one time I was paying a friend back for lunch and accidentally added an extra zero to the amount. My heart dropped to my stomach! Luckily, if you're a Capitec user, there's a way to reverse a transaction using the app.

The short answer is that you can reverse some debit orders on the Capitec app. However, for incorrect payments to individuals, you’ll likely need to contact the bank directly.

Reversing a Debit Order

Debit orders are payments that you've given a company permission to take from your account each month. Sometimes, you might want to stop or reverse a debit order. Maybe you've cancelled a service but the company is still billing you, or maybe you just don't recognise the debit order at all.

Here's how to reverse a debit order on the Capitec app:

1. Open your Capitec app and tap on "Transact."

2. Go to "Debit Orders."

3. Log in with your Remote PIN.

4. From the list of debit orders, choose the one you want to reverse.

5. Follow the prompts to complete the reversal.

What About Wrong Payments?

Unfortunately, you can't reverse a direct payment to someone else through the app. A few months ago, I was in this exact situation. I was paying a contractor and accidentally sent the money to the wrong account number. I spent a good 30 minutes frantically searching the app for a "reverse" button that just wasn't there.

If you've sent money to the wrong person, here's what you need to do:

1. Contact Capitec Immediately: The sooner you let them know, the better. You can call them or visit a branch.

2. Provide the Details: Have all the details of the transaction handy, including the date, time, amount, and the incorrect account number you sent the money to.

3. They'll Try to Help: Capitec will then try to contact the person who received the money and ask them to return it.

It's important to know that Capitec can't guarantee you'll get your money back. If the person who received it has already spent it or refuses to return it, there's not much the bank can do. That's why it's so important to double-check all the details before you make a payment.
