How to Stop My ABSA Card From Tapping

Sometimes, you might want to stop your ABSA card from tapping. Maybe it’s for security reasons, or you just prefer using your PIN for every purchase. Whatever the reason, it is possible to turn off this feature.
The quickest way to stop your ABSA card from tapping is to contact Absa directly. You can either visit your nearest Absa branch in person or call their Card Call Centre on 0861 462 273. They will be able to deactivate the "Tap to Pay" or contactless function on your card.
Tap to Pay, also known as contactless payment, uses a technology called Near Field Communication (NFC). It lets you pay by simply tapping your card on a payment machine that has the contactless symbol. It's designed to be quick and convenient. For transactions over a certain amount, usually R500, you will often need to enter your PIN even if tap is enabled. However, for smaller amounts, a tap is all it takes, which means no PIN is needed.
Why You Might Want to Turn Off Tap to Pay
While convenient, some people prefer to disable the tap-to-pay feature for various reasons:
- Security concerns: There can be worries about accidental payments if your card is too close to a payment terminal, or even concerns about theft. Some people feel more secure knowing that every transaction requires a PIN.
- Lost or stolen cards: If your card is lost or stolen, funds can still be spent via contactless payments for transactions under the PIN-free limit, even after the card is blocked, because the funds on the contactless portion of your card are like cash. If your card is lost, it's very important to call the Absa stop card number on 0800 11 11 55 immediately.
- Personal preference: Simply put, some people just don't like the tapping feature and prefer the traditional swipe or insert method.
I remember once my card slipped out of my wallet without me noticing, and I only realised it much later. Luckily, I had set my point-of-sale limits fairly low on the app. While it still caused a bit of stress, knowing that large tap transactions couldn't happen without a PIN gave me some peace of mind before I could get it stopped.
What to Do to Disable Tapping
As mentioned, your main options are:
1. Visit an Absa Branch: Head to your closest Absa branch and speak to a consultant. They can help you deactivate the contactless function on your physical card.
2. Call the Card Call Centre: Dial 0861 462 273 to speak with an Absa representative. Explain that you want to turn off the tap-to-pay feature on your card.
You can't typically disable the physical card's tap function through the Absa Banking App. The app usually helps with things like temporarily locking your card, stopping and replacing a lost card, or managing your overall transaction limits. While you can manage limits for ATM withdrawals and point-of-sale transactions on the app, this doesn't fully disable the tap function for smaller amounts.
I once helped my grandmother with her banking app, and she was worried about accidentally tapping her card when taking it out of her purse. For her, calling the bank directly felt more reassuring than trying to navigate app settings, and they were able to sort it out easily over the phone.
Keep in mind that if you get a new or replacement card, the contactless feature will be active again after your first "insert and PIN" transaction at an ATM or POS device. You would then need to follow the same steps to deactivate it if you wish.
Even though some people prefer to disable the tap feature on their physical cards, tapping with your phone using digital wallets like Apple Pay or Google Pay, or Absa's own Absa Pay feature, can actually be very secure. This is because these methods often require your phone's biometric security (like a fingerprint or face scan) for each transaction, adding an extra layer of protection.
