How to Reverse Money From Standard Bank to Capitec

It's happened to almost everyone: you make a payment, hit send, and then a cold dread washes over you as you realise you sent money to the wrong account, or maybe for the wrong amount. When that money moves between different banks, like from Standard Bank to Capitec, getting it back can feel like a maze. But don't worry, there are steps you can take.

If you've sent money from Standard Bank to Capitec, successfully getting it back depends a lot on *how* you sent it. For regular EFTs (Electronic Funds Transfers), reversing the payment is often tricky and needs the help of both banks and sometimes even the person who received the money. However, if it was a debit order that went off your Standard Bank account, you have a better chance of reversing it through your Standard Bank app.

Reversing Money Sent from Standard Bank to Capitec (EFTs)

When you send a normal EFT from your Standard Bank account to a Capitec account, it's generally seen as a final transaction. This means you can't just press a button in your Standard Bank app to get the money back directly. Standard Bank officially states that EFTs are generally not reversible.

However, if you've made a mistake, you can ask Standard Bank to try and recall the payment. This is called an "EFT payment recall." You'll usually need to fill out a special form and send it to them via email. The catch? This process can take up to 10 working days, and success isn't guaranteed. Why? Because the money is already in the Capitec account, and Capitec usually needs the recipient's permission to take the money back. If the person who received the money doesn't agree, it becomes very hard for the banks to reverse it without a legal order.

I remember one time I accidentally sent money to an old contact instead of my friend. It was a small amount, luckily, but I still contacted Standard Bank right away. They told me about the recall form, and honestly, it felt like a long shot. After about a week, they let me know the recipient didn't agree to the reversal. It was a tough lesson learned about double-checking!

Reversing Debit Orders from Standard Bank

If the money you want to reverse was a debit order that came off your Standard Bank account and went to a Capitec beneficiary (like a subscription or insurance payment), you have a much clearer path to getting your money back. Standard Bank makes it fairly easy to reverse debit orders through their app.

Here’s how you can usually do it:

The money from a reversed debit order usually shows up back in your account within two business days. This process is generally available for debit orders up to R3,000, and sometimes even up to R50,000 for certain types of reversals, depending on the bank's latest policies and the age of the debit order (often within 40 days).

What if the Money was Sent from Capitec to Standard Bank?

If the situation is reversed, and you need to get money back that you sent from your Capitec account to a Standard Bank account, the rules are similar but handled by Capitec.

I once had a situation where I accidentally sent a small amount via Capitec's app to a friend, but I used an old, incorrect account number they had given me. I immediately went into the app, but there wasn't a direct "reverse" button for that type of transfer. I called Capitec, and they explained that for transfers already processed to another bank, they'd have to contact the receiving bank and the person. Luckily, in my case, the account number was so wrong that the money bounced back into my account a day later. It was a relief, but it taught me that speed and correct details are key!

Important Things to Remember

Reversing money transfers between different banks like Standard Bank and Capitec can be a bit of a challenge, especially for EFTs. Debit orders offer a more straightforward reversal process through your bank's app. Always remember that quick action and clear communication with your bank are your strongest tools.
